An american woman travels to russia to help rebuild after communism. She works on electric plants to help bring power to the cities. After much work with the schools (and a brief romance with a one-armed toy-maker) she is able to help rebuild and put lights in a school - thus "everything is illuminated."
The themes are: man vs nature (because the power plants are very run down by neglect).

Sorry, there is no way to read and understand that book in one night. Seeing the movie won't help because it is entirely different. A young man searches for his roots in an Eastern European country, with the help of a weird family, but there is much more in the book about the history of his family's village, and much of it is just plain weird. I have read the book, and I still am not clear as to what it means.

It happens in a light bulb factory. A couple of people are fooling around and while they are doing this, one of them hits against a switch and all the light bulbs go on.
Not only is the whole factory illuminated, but they are enlightened that fooling around in a light bulb factory is not the best of ideas.
It's very profound and meaningful.

watch the movie you can download it . A boy who collects family memrobilia gets a picture of from his grandfather the picture is of a women and his grandfather in thier old country the boy goes to search for this women. He finds her and rhe boy finds out she helped hide him or something and everyone else in the town was murdered by some army or something that's all I remember from the movie...sorry
