I lack confidence meeeting people and would like to learn how to be more socially skilled...?

I lack confidence meeeting people and would like to learn how to be more socially skilled especially in larger social gatherings such as parties. Can anyone recommend good movies in which the main character(s) excel (are highly confident) in:
a) meeting and conversing with strangers
b) being the life of the party

I'd like to study their behaviours.

First off, it is an acquired trait that can only be accomplished in baby steps. I can tell you more, but to answer your question.. the movie i like was called new guy..it is not exactly realistic (none of them are), but the idea is there:)

Go to a public place, a mall, a restaurant, and watch the behavior of people. Watch how people interact with each other.

Don't try to act like someone else, just be yourself. One way to get to know people better is to ask them something about themselves. There are very few listeners, but most people love to talk about themselves, their interests, their cars, their jobs, you name it. Once they get started just listen and once in awhile ask a question about what they are talking about so they know you are listening and are interested.

this is something that you cant learn from a movie.. it is about self esteme. you need to focus on your good points and put them out there and remember when going up to someone new.. the worst they can do is walk away..

watch vince vaugn in old school, hes smooth! keep conversation light so it can switch in any direction, and so you dont start a religous debate or something that will cause arguments!
