I am looking for a very detailed response on how and why wal-mart is good or bad for America. Look for different opinions as long as they are serious answers and very detailed. Thanks,

1. Wal-Mart destroys more jobs than it creates. A new Wal-Mart destroys jobs by putting local merchants out of business. The jobs Wal-Mart creates are fewer, lower-paying and mostly part-time.

2. Wal-Mart burdens public health care programs. Most jobs at Wal-Mart have little or no health benefits. Wal-Mart encourages its workers to seek public assistance for their health care. In Georgia, 10,000 children of Wal-Mart employees were enrolled in the public health insurance program.

3. Wal-Mart exploits workers. The average hourly worker makes just $18,000 dollars a year. Meanwhile, the corporation raked in $7 billion in profits last year. Wal-Mart has known for years that many of its stores violate child labor laws and state regulations requiring work breaks - but has done little, if anything, to stop it.

4. Wal-Mart degrades the environment. The federal government charged Wal-Mart with violating the Clean Water Act in 17 locations across the country. Run-off from Wal-Mart construction sites polluted drinking water, streams and lakes. To settle the charges Wal-Mart agreed to pay a $1 million dollar fine.

Proponents of Wal-Mart tout their low prices - and the positive impact they have on the purchasing power of consumers. But Wal-Mart is able to provide low prices because they are heavily subsidized by taxpayers.

GOOD for America. Walmart has made it possible for even the poorest people to afford the many things that most regarded as luxuries years ago. For example electronics like TV's, VCR's DVD players, etc. Also clothing at reasonable prices, food, etc. It has forced the suppliers to cut their profits a little to make things more affordable for the masses.

Those who complain about lost jobs etc are people who have no motivation to better themselves .. they want to get paid ridiculously high wages for a job that cheap labor can do..why? Why should a person doing work that cheap labor can do be paid more than cheap labor would? That person needs to have some motivation and go and get some skills that are in demand and that no just anybody can do .. then you can demand AND GET higher wages because of your skills.

Those complaining about smaller murchants being priced out of business .. that is tough BUT there is compettition in EVERY business..why should they be protected. If the consumer demands lower prices and the smaller merchant cannot or will not provide it the consumer will look elsewhere to get that ... every business has competition... I run a service business .. 8 or 9 years ago we were one of 4 companies in the area offering our service..today there are probably 20 or more...we have to compete with these other businesses...that's life .. you just have to provide a better product, better service, or something else to attract and keep your customer. For small reatailers competing with Walmart they need to offer to their customer something Walmart can't .. small ness, personal service, and a fair price..maybe a little more than Walmart, but worth it because of the better service .. does that make sense? For example I prefer to go into a small supermarket to buy my groceries rather than Walmart because I don't like having to WALK the great distance in the Walmart store...I do still shop there for other things..

I'll play devils advocate.

I vote bad.

Here is why.

China builds it. Walmart buys it and stocks it on the shelves.
You use a credit card to buy it.
You stock it in your home.
You wear it out or lose interest and throw it away.
It then goes to our landfill.

You are still making payments on it even though its worthless now.

China collects the money from walmart.

China buys American debt. Its been a while since I looked it up but as I recall it was some where around 2% of your national debt is now owned by China.

Summary: You buy it and stock pile it in our landfill. You pay on it and pay on it in a never ending cycle of credit card payment. China uses the money to buy more debt. Your about to become the indentured servants of China.

Its good. Here is why.

China is still very much a third world country. They have their own energy crisis complete with rolling blackouts.

Thanks in part to walmart and the money it moves around, we have jobs for walmart workers. We have a tax base for any comunity that has a walmart.

China's total gross domestic product is only about 2% of the total growth, (not total size just the growth) of the US economy. They pose no threat. Let the dollars flow.

There are 2 samples for you both pro and con. Good luck on your search.
