Very powerful question my friend.
We have leaders of countries that are being paid off by the Republicans that pretend to like us.
The people of the world think very poorly now since the Republicans turned us into just another country that tortures people and is plagued with corruption.

Australia is an ally and has troops in Afghanistan and Iraq (and even went to Vietnam!!!).
However, I'd just like to add that it's the Government of Australia that is the ally, not the people. Most of the people here disagree with the invasion of Iraq.

The term 'ally' in the modern day scenarios genarally means a party \ orgnanization \ country on similiar political grounds as you.
In case of the US, the foreign policy is of keeping dominance in financial and economic factors as well as ward of terrorists off its homeland.
therefore, who may be an ally now could be an enemy tomorrow.
the best idea would be to watch news channels from both sides ... just wacthing CNN wont paint a complete picture :)

For the most part democracies with conservative govts. When the chips are down there are 2 countries we can trust regardless of what party is in power. Israel & UK, in that order.
