When I pick up my female guinea pig, she always makes this purring sound, but when my son picks her up she does not. What does this mean?

Sorry everyone, it seems as though we have an angry man who did not like my answer so he decided to hunt me down and give everyone a thumbs down who are being nice to me. Never ceases to amaze me...Sorry again ...lets move forward.

GP don't purr. You are hearing a gumbling noise and since she is doing it when you pick her up, she may not feel comfortable of safe- possible it's the manner in which you pick her up. Watch the way your son does it, and see what is different from the way you do it.

You have a happy piggy! I believe the noise is called a 'chut'. It means they're content, they feel comfortable around you and they trust you. Mine will do it if I've just given them some fresh hay and when they're super happy they'll chut and start bouncing around (also called 'popcorning'). They will also start making that noise while eating. Then they start wheeking and all that other guinea pig stuff (aka 'motorboating') and will run in circles with glee. I love it when my guys start purring! It's a hoot! Especially when they know treats are gonna be doled out as soon as the water bottle is going to be filled.

Purring in G. pigs is very normal...as to why she does it with you and not your son...you may never know. But pigs purr when they feel safe and content...also, are you the one that feeds her? She may relate you to food or feeding time...I had a G. pig that was very vocal when the fridge opened...she related that sound to eating time...

She's just fine. Your sons actions my make her a little nervous. They bond to humans, and she may be bonded to you and not your son. As long as she doesn't make short squeeky sounds when your son holds her she's fine. The piggies I have now are just over 6 years old.

These webs will help you keep your piggie healthy. :->)

My G. Pig purrs too. It just means that she is happy and knows you really well. You shouldn't worry about it.

That purring sound is a sign of contentment.

I think it means she likes you...I used to have a mouse that would do exactly the same thing. He would purr when I picked him up, but wouldn't if anyone else would...You're not crazy, I promise!

Maybe it could be like with cats. Cats purr when they really like you and when they are happy. So i'm guessing your guinea pig likes you very much and is happy when you hold her.

she probably likes the way you carry her and talk to her but does not really fancy your son...
