Because it's a quick fix. Lifestyle and dietary habits lead to a lot of problems, instead of changing the behavior, a pill allows the behavior to continue. No one wants to be told to CHANGE their behavior. People are stupid enough to believe that if the symptoms go away, that means the problem must have gone away. They don't realize it just gives the problem room to grow into something worse.
Xxandra said it all, pharmaceutical companies are allowed to advertise drugs, people go to the doctor and are given the drug. We do not have a "health care" system, it's a "sick care" system. Doctors are taught to treat the symptoms, they do not teach how to prevent the conditions in the first place.

I think it has a lot to do with the recent onslaught of direct-to-consumer advertising of prescription drugs.
Have you ever stopped to wonder, why they're advertising Zoloft on television if it can't be obtained without a prescription? They're enticing you to go in to the doctor's office and request Zoloft by name... I've heard that when a patient walks into a doctor's office requesting a specific drug that they've seen on television, 70% of the time, they walk out with that exact prescription.
They're making it seem trendy to take prescriptions. The best statistic that I can find states that the average number of prescriptions per person in the United States is something ungodly, like 10. I believe it, though... doctors seem to have the elderly on every prescription drug imaginable.
I think you might like this article... it's called "If prescription drugs are so good, where are all the healthy drug takers?"

xxandra's got it right. We have comercials and print adverts everywhere we look telling us that it's not our fault, we're sick, goto the doctor, and tell him what drugs you want.
Am I the only sane person left here? Does ANYbody else see what's wrong with the above statement? hello?!?, McFly?
Then, in the schools, we have teachers telling parents to not send their kids back to school without a script for Rittalin or Adderall. All of these kids that sit in front of a tv playing video games, and grunting for their caretakers to bring them more soda and cookies, and then if you give them a pill, it'll make them all better. Once again, why isn't the kid outside playing?
Parents just don't understand that kids are ALL hyper, the ones that are calm are the ones that might have problems!

Because if they didn't have their magic pills, they would actually have to change how they live and most people's minds are just way too lazy for that. People are far too invested in their value systems, their preferences and their comfort zone to make changes. They fear it. So, the pills.

it's no wonder when every other television commerical is for a new drug that you can take for this or that. because of these commercials people now want to go to the doctor, after diagnosing themselves, and tell them what kind of drugs (because of what they have seen on tv) they need. i think these commercials should be banned.
