So far you are all wrong. Jim Thorpe was the best football player of all time. He played both ways and multiple positions; QB, RB, WR, KR, etc. He set the bar for all to follow. Jim Thorpe is arguably the best athlete of all time having achieved stardom in baseball, basketball, football and track & field on both a professtional level as well as in the olympics. Without Jim Thorpe there would be no NFL.
Walter Payton is a close second in football. No one since 'Sweetness' has played with the guts and passion that Walter Payton played the game with...

i'll take ya one step farther...
Best RB: Walter "Sweetness" Payton (As well as one of the nicest guys you could have ever met).
Best QB: (As much as it pains me to say this): Brett Favre...no one was better in the clutch as No. 4
Best WR: Jerry Rice (Enough said)
Best LB: "Samurai" Mike Singletary-One of the toughest, meanest SOB's on the field and one of the greatest guys off.
You can't say one player was the best ever...you're comparing apples to oranges to lemons. experts look at the best at each position...not best overall.

Without a doubt, it has to be Jim Brown. Left at the top of his game and on his own terms.
