I can see the excitement going as the new wares off, but the passion should stay as long as there is love, right?

Actually I have done quite a bit of research on this topic and there is an actual scientific answer to this. In the first 18 months of a great relationship, the chemicals in your brain are on overload giving you that sense of passion and lust and love. After the first 18 months, those chemicals no longer flood your brain so you lose the passion but in fact you have learned to love this person therefore you believe that love and passion are linked when in actuality they are not. Really if you think about it, falling in love is actually a chemical imbalance, hence the term crazy in love lol. Hope this helps.

I don't think you ever have to lose passion. To say that passion in love wears off is like saying that passion for any hobby or music or art you like wears off too. Yes, the excitement does wear off, but passion can only lapse if you let it. I think it's probably more realistic to say that lust wears off. However, as long as you truly love someone, you can get just as excited and passionate about someone you've been with for 10 years...just like I'm still passionate about causes and hobbies I was passionate about in my 20's.
