It depends what you base happiness on. Happiness is here today but gone tomorrow. I think contentment is a better goal no matter who you are, rich or poor. Being content with who you are, what you have and where you are headed.

A 13 year old would probably prefer the life of the 1st one... but as I'm not 13, I'd choose the second one! Family is everything, so is love and friendship. Money comes after.
