The editor in chief is responsible for assigning work to editors and writing the editorial for the magazine. They control the copy. Have say over all content. The editor in chief is the first butt kicked when things go wrong and then disperses the butt kicking from their station down the line. There are so many tasks the editor in chief is responsible for under this umbrella of bigger tasks, it is worth checking out at a college.

The Editor in Chief looks after, and is responsible for, the entire editorial operation for the magazine. If there are any legal problems then he or she is the one that is responsible. They would probably report direct to the publisher.
They would also be the public face of the magazine; the one who is quoted or interviewed in connection with any media coverage the magazine gets.
