Is it really against the law not to answer and send back the census survey you got in your mail? What can they possible do? Put you in jail? a hefty fine?

It isn't a very hard questionnaire to fill out, so why don't you just do it and send it in. Then you don't have to worry about a penalty. The Census is not an invasion of your privacy and actually gives you an opportunity to let the country know that you really exist.

Yes. You are required by law to answer and return a census. You can be fined and possibly imprisoned for failure to comply.
