When was the last time you felt displaced?

I think it was recently in New York. I was walking down the street, feeling a bit trapped by the noise, the crowds, and the fact that every five feet there was someone smoking. In my generally quiet, spacious corner of the Midwest most folks don't puff up, and I just remember feeling my head ache from breathing in the fumes. I also recall how the crowds practically moved like ocean waves against the traffic, if a car slowed down people practically surged in front or behind it, flowing, flowing, flowing as they made their way to their own individual destinations.

Finally, looking up in Times Square I was amazed at how every square inch of the place was seemingly electric and promoting some product. It's not a subtle environment, and I realized I was probably no more significant than a wad of chewing gum on the sidewalk. It was a very impersonal, overwhelming environment.

I was with a bunch of friends and they were drinking wine and crawling around on the floor doing a craft project. I don't drink and I can't get on my knees because I have a formerly broken ankle and it hurts to flex it and it's really hard to get up because I have to get up flat footed so I felt like an invalid and completely out of my element.
