If you leave it connected, it should work just fine. But if you unplug it and try to play it from your friend's computer, it will not work because the registry files are stored on your own computer.
But one thing to take note!
Firewire, unless it is firewire 800 (which I doubt you have connected), is still MUCH slower than internal, so if it is a game like oblivion for instance, it will have REALLY slow loading times.

YES!!! I do the same thing coz i ran outta space on my desktop too and i bought an external hard drive and installed all my games on it. Only thing is you need to make sure you don't move the wire while in use as that could corrupt the portable hard drive, also make sure have USB speed 2.0 for fastest daa transfer.

Like everyone else says, yes you can. Why do you want to? If you are out of space on your C drive, then try to dump your data files to the external drive instead. That way you can take your data files with you if you want.
If you are expecting to take your external drive to a different computer and run the game from there, IT WONT WORK because the game stores its main variables in the registry - on the C drive. No way around that...

When you are installing, choose a destination folder on the other hard drive, rather than using the default that pops up. The installed shortcuts should automatically reach wherever you do the installation. If not, modify the shortcut to the folder you need to reach.

Yes you should be able to. when you load the game it should akd for the location Just chang the drive from C: to what ever letter drive you hhvae it assigned to.
Also if it puts a shortcut on your desktop you may have to change its properties as it ma look for the C drive and you will have to change that too.

You most certainly can. I would use a USB 2.0 or Firewire drive.
