Hey everybody...since high school I have always thought I could never do stylish tops because of my unproportioned body. I wear a size 7/8 pant with about a 29-30" waist, but my chest size is naturally a 36DD. I live in a rinky little town and there are no places where I can get my clothes altered that I would trust. I have always worn big baggy t-shirts, but I long to wear cute little tops! However, nothing fits! If I get an XX Large, it just hangs around my body like a toga, but if I get something fitted or made of a spandex-y like material, I either have major cleavage OR you the fabric is stretched so tightly across my chest you can see the color of my bra through it!

What cuts/styles of shirts would you recommend for someone with my body proportion?

i started sewing my own clothes for reasons similar to yours.
i could never find clothing to flatter my figure of very full hips and bust and a tapered waist. everything hung in my middle in a very unattractive manner. so i went down to the joann's and picked up a few patterns. i learned how to sew, use a pattern and alter a dress in one fell swoop. i look for dresses that already accomodate my figure then change them to suit me even better. today i constantly receive compliments on my outfits. i even started sewing for my son who is very thin and rather tall for his age. before i made his clothes everything fit him either baggy or "high-watered."

i know sewing is not a solution for everyone. you may not have any interest in making your own clothes. the experience for me was liberating. today, i get my full figure into some of the cutest strapless, backless, even halter tops you can imagine. i build bras into the dresses that don't allow me to wear my own bras and i'm a 40DD.

Banana Republic has some tops that are cut fuller in the bust, be prepared to plunk down some change tho. Is there somewhere outside of town you could take your clothes to get tailored? If you can find European tailoring-that's the best kind, as opposed to the dry cleaners, etc. it would be worth the drive.

Or you could always get a sewing machine and take a class or two?

Try tops with princess seaming, that is nipped in under the bust, along the torso-fitted.

Sweetheart necklines, v necks are good in stretch tops, and if your bra is going to show thru, get a cute lacy bra! Make it kind of your style.

Ever tried Fredrick's of Hollywood or Victoria's Secret online? They sell big boobie bras, they should sell sexy shirts too...

good luck shopping!

Tailored blouses with seams that slenderize on the sides, this will also emphasize your bust in a nice way. Also off the shoulder sweaters will look good, emphasizing the skin of your shoulders which can make your bust look smaller Good luck.

wrap shirts work well, although you may have to sew in a snap, or use a pin to keep the cleavage area decent.
