There were a few purposes. One, of course, was money. They knew that this would do well, so it was a wise investment for the production company.

Another was more pure--in an attempt to keep Larson's "spirit" alive, they wanted to make sure everyone could partake in the magic of Rent. By making a movie, they allowed people who wouldn't be able to afford theater tickets to see it on film. (Although I do think that there is a DISTINCT difference between the magic of theatre and the magic of film.)

They released the movie at an absolutely brilliant time. The play was 10 years old, and its popularity was just beginning to die out. In 10 years, though, a new generation of possible Rentheads has cropped up, and this movie was probably the first exposure many of them had to it. There has definitely been a new surge in the popularity of the play since the film's release, which means more money for Larson's family and the production company, as well as disallowing people to forget about Jonathan himself. (If you watch the documentary attached, that does seem to be the goal of many people involved--to make sure Jonathan Larson is not forgotten.)

I know that there are some shows that had a run on Broadway and the traveling shows that I could never have afforded to see, so seeing them on tape was the next best way, besides my girls love Donny Osmond in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat and this was a worn out tape and DVD - we are on our 2nd DVD copy of Joseph.

The first answer has the best response.

Money.

Also, it's hard to transport a Broadway show around and watch it whenever you want. Turning it out as a movie solves that problem.
It also gets it to a wider audience.

I'm ecstatic whenever a good movie version is made of a favorite Broadway show - then I can own it and watch it as many times that I want, without theatre runs or money being an issue.
