I always enjoy listening to the stuff people say, if a processor is faster, it is generally faster no matter what you do with it. The Athlon 64 and the Pentium 4 were about equal, with perhaps a slight edge to Athlon 64. The Athlon 64 X2 crushed the Pentium Ds. But now Intel has the Core 2 Duo out, which is hands down the fastest processor out, gaming or business or playing solitaire, it is the fastest processor out, period.
I really take issue though with people saying AMD is just coming up to the standards of Intel, AMD has been beating Intel soundly for the last few years, only recently did Intel get back on top.
I will provide benchmarks to back up my claims.

AMD used to be better until very recently when intel came out with the core 2 duo that completely blow AMD away in terms of performance. I think AMD is going to try to catch up but as of right at this moment, intel has a good lead. The processor is pricey though, so if you're not going to do something overly processor intensive, you probably can go for the older models, and in that case AMD and Intel are about the same level (I would personally go with AMD, but I think it's a matter of preference).

here is the truth (coming from a previous AMD lover)
Intel Core 2 Duo > AMD cpus > Intel Pentium 4s
if u don't under stand that, then
core 2 duos are better than any cpus in the world
any AMD cpu is better than Pentium 4s which are right after Core 2 Duos in the Intel cpu line
anything below P4s are slower
so, go with Intel Core 2 Duos
the best bang for the buck is either the
E6300, E6400, or E6600
i like the E6600 because it is only 315 bucks on www.newegg.com
and it has the ability to clock to atleast 3.4ghz
that is about a 10ghz Pentium 4 (dual core)

Regardless what you do (I'm an AMD guy myself), match the right memory. I read somewhere where a slower processor will beat a higher processor when matched with the right memory. It really is that critical.
Regarding price, buy the most that you can afford. You know that in 2 years that it wont even be on Toms Hardware benchmarks. If all you are going to do is surf and word, then you dont need much. The rest you can expand into. If you are a gamer, then you need deep pockets (and dont skimp on the memory specs - not just the size)

although intel come out with their new duo technology, the price is too expensive, but the performance is great and stable. the warranty coverage, terms and condition are better than amd. amd, in term of performance, is great, personally, in both gaming and biz. amd weakness in their thermal status. they can easily burnt and you must install extra cooling device (fan, heat pipe and others). the better the performance the hotter it'll be! still amd is much more cheaper (a lot more) than intel.

i have bought and used every processor to date....from Pentium 10Mhz, to the New Core2Duo Extreme, and to this date, my favorite processor was the AMD Opteron, it was a server processor, but transplanted into a desktop....it was extremely reliable and overclock crazy! i went from a 2.0 to a 3.4 with only 1 degree temp raise....plus i never turned off my computer for a year. Go AMD!
