I know this is strange...we are all middle-aged women, married with kids. One of our group is the obvious 'leader', although why we need a 'leader' I have no clue.

The other ladies seem to hang on her every word. If she says we're going here or doing this, they all agree. If I make a suggestion, it is ignored. I mean, I'm kinda tired of going to the same restaurant every time we go out to dinner together.

She brags about her kids and the other women all hang on her every word. She brags about her house, her husband, her dog...you name it - hers is BEST. I find it so tiresome, but even more tiresome that the others all agree and beg for more.

I'm wondering -- is it typical for a group of lady friends to have a 'leader' such as this? It seems kind of weird to me, but maybe this is the way things work.

if is not necessary or mandatory that you be in such association then quit. after all in all gathering there should be voices not just one and those women are blind, aesily manipulated and low self esteemed to allow her talk as if she lives in a palace while you all live in a slump. she does not in actuality have any leadership quality.i'm just satisfied that you are not like the rest of the fools and i know it's so anoying because i've been in this type of situation so my advice is that you leave the blind ones and look for those like you (the ones with eyes).

Kind of strange to hear about an "alpha female", isn't it? However, I've noticed that this usually happens within a circle of friends. In each group, the one that brags and boasts more about what they have or do or whatever always seems to be the one that everyone likes most and follows constantly. Kudos to you for thinking around this lady.

But to answer your question, I'd say that yes, this is normal. She probably is actually insecure about something and wants constant reassurance.

Im sure your "friends" were the same way when they were in high school and college. Girls never really change. If you are a follower, you will always be a follower, and if you are a leader you will always be a leader! Leaders seek people and friends who will admire and praise them. It is a sociological fact. The strong prey on the weak, and the weak have no way of defending themselves.

Maybe they're afraid not to. It sounds a bit like high school, where everyone follows the leader because she is the one "in charge", and they're afraid that she'll look down on them if they don't agree with everything she says.
Most people still seek approval from others, even when we're older.
Kudos to you for noticing! :)

She sounds like a boasty person. Urgh it must be irritating having to hang out with a person that bossy or up herself..

Your suggestions need to be taken into consideration, not ignored. Have you talked about it with your other friends? I think it's time you did...

yep..I just happen to work with someone like that and have asked 2 questions this weekend that have to do with her behavior. Your friend and my co-worker sound like one in the same, very controlling and everyone loves them...*sigh*...I don't have an answer for why but if you find one let me know! Good luck!

What I find strange is that you're still apart of this "pack".

Find a different group of women who are smart individuals.
