Henry was above the usual height of the times, being around 6'3". His skeleton (measured at Windsor in the early 19th century, where he was buried along with Jane Seymour, his third wife) was 6'2" so, with flesh, footwear and clothes, this could make him a little taller in life. His armour, preserved in the Tower of London, would fit a man of nearly 6'4".

As a young man, Henry was attractive, even allowing for the flattery of those describing him. He had strong features, with piercing blue eyes, a high-bridged nose, and a small but sensual mouth. His voice was slightly high-pitched; his auburn hair was combed straight, and until 1518 he was clean-shaven.

The red-gold hair he inherited from the Plantagenets. Even when he became obese and unpredictable (and cruel) later in life, he retained a great air of majesty.

Henry was nearly 6ft tall. I know the more popular image of the king is the bloated and broad older man, but as a young man he was renowned for his good looks and athleticism. It was partly he stature, good looks and wit that gave him his intial appeal to everyone.

Like many things about Henry VIII, many things are exaggerated. He liked to portray himself as over six feet tall, but in fact, he was about five foot ten -- but he may have been close to six feet around......
