Don't buy it in stores, you can get it there but it is expensive. It is best to get it online at www.newegg.com or www.tigerdirect.com or some place like that. If you want to make it really easy, send me an email with your exact model number and how much memory you want and I can find some for you. Email is in my profile.

Several web sites have charts to show which model computers take which kind of memory (and some computers will accept more than one kind of memory. Try www.tigerdirect.com and just type in your computer make and model. Their charts also tell you how much total memory can be installed. You have to be careful about static electricity when you install memory, because static discharge can ruin your new memory units. Once you find the type you need, several sites will give you a comparison of the cost in different places. I think one site is www.bizrate.com

you can add more memory by buying a memory stick 128 256 512mbs and usually u can find them at places such as comp usa some of the office supply stores may have them just make sure u get the right one that matches the one inside your computer( the notches) so it fits correctly. I take mine out and take it to the store with me so I get the right one.

Hello.
I usually don't like to point people to web pages in answers, but I think that in this case it'll help:
www.crucial.com
Crucial is on (of many) companies that sells memory upgrades for computers of all kinds, but on their site they have some diagnostic tools that make it relatively easy and painless to figure out what your options are. I've bought memory upgrades from them and their service and fulfillment are outstanding.
Try that out.
Thanks!

Depending on your computer brand name. Try to get the best match. One of my favorite place is www.4allmemory.com.
for compaq, try this:
http://www.4allmemory.com/search/compaq/presario.cfm?q=Compaq+Presario+5000
It can check your system what you need. It's one of the best price & service I've gotten.

I suggest an external hard drive because they are relatively cheap and require the least technical ability to use. They are also great for sharing files.
