Yes, they did have tails. Gorillas have an evolutionary history similar to that of humans and over time they went from lemur like creatures to something that is ground dwelling and has no tail.

Fun fact: ONLY monkey's in South America have prehensile tails (and not all of them either), so none in Africa have a prehensile tail. Tailessness is actually quite rare in mammals but most apes do not have a tail. There are a lot of reasons for having a tail, which can, in the case of prehensile tails, can be used as an extra limb or for balancing or for movement eg birds, fish etc. While monkey's have tails, we have 2 legs and 2 extremely fantastic hands which means were are pretty unique. We have much more ability to use hands than pretty much any other animal (opposable thumb, fingerprints) as we are so dexterous. What point is a tail when there are no trees to climb??? What need is a tail in walking on 2 legs.....um none. Nature is diverse so we fill up all niches and habitats and have the most appropriate appendages and equipment that others to succeed (or it or the species disappears)

At some point, yes, gorillas had tails. I'm not sure they were actually considered 'gorillas' then, but in their evolutionary chain, at some point, I'm sure they did.
