Housing is a waste of time. Tobacco way high. Gas, car insurance, cable tv, way high.

Hard to say. I just graduated college and haven't had any problems despite the fact that I am working as an intern (paid of course). You can find affordable housing, but the price is only reasonable if you have someone else helping to pay the rent (i.e. roomate, girlfriend, wife, etc). Food at groceries stores is about the same prices that I paid back in rural Massachusetts.
I think there are a lot of drawbacks to living in California... more than movies and television show in their dramatized versions of the state. Cost of living can be affordable depending on what you are looking for. If you are planning on buying a house, starting a family, and/or eating dinner at a restaraunt every night then DANGER STAY AWAY! If you want to live, work, and play in one of the most desireable cities in the US, it can't hurt to give it a try (unless if you want the things above).

Speaking of San Diego, where 2000 square feet homes are near $700,000. Condos are a half-mil. Assuming that you didn't inherit a lot of wealth, it means that husband & wife both work, and make about $150,000 combined to afford a home.
Gas is $2.40 - San Diego has the most expensive gas in the country, since we have different grades here than anywhere else. We've got sales tax, property tax and income tax.
When I read that other parts of the country have homes for $200,000, I am just amazed. Single Family homes at that price haven't been available in San Diego for twenty years.

Get ready to break the bank and go into debt unless you think 1 million is a good price for a 2000 sq. foot house not to mention the natural disasters and high taxes.

Yes. It is high. Housing is the most expensive. Ca tries to get every dime out of you that they can. A modest apartment is expensive and usually not very clean. $1000+ for one bedroom unless you live out in the desert. It isn't worth it. There's too many people, too much traffic, too many huge spiders, the streets are dirty, the air is dry and dusty at times (no rain), the people are mean (esp. on the freeways) people drive 80 and 90 miles/hr. It's a dangerous and deadly place.

Yes it is in most places.
The guy above is probably describing Southern California. It's nicer in the north, although still expensive in the cities. (San Francisco is so expensive that our minimum wage is $8.75.)

Food- normal.
Housing- Expensive, expensive, expensive(though how expensive depends on the area. Inland tends to be several 1,000 dollars cheaper).
