Almost all of the people who work on elections are civilians, ordinary folks who are not employed by the county or the election department. They are paid only for the one 14-hour-long day, as temporary workers. I did this for 16 years in Clark County, Nevada from 1984 to 2000. After what I saw in my own little rinky-dink precinct in November 2000, I quit. Every civilian election board worker MUST grow a spine and carry not only a tape-recorder, but a camera or video unit as well. Even a cell phone picture can carry a lot of weight. If ANYONE witnesses anything "fishy" they should act AT ONCE, to call, record, or tape the event for posterity. Someone is in on this, and they know who they are. We don't, unless someone speaks up and "narcs" on them. Remember, they can only kill you once...

I know you're asking a political question and all the naysayers are going to come out of the woodwork. But geez, I have never seen so much name calling as I saw on this question. it sounds like there are a bunch of defensive Republicans who can't stand the idea that one or both of the elections were stolen.
One poster said Bush won in 2000 because he received more votes. Actually, Gore received more popular votes. Bush and Gore were neck and neck with the electoral votes until the Florida mess.
And the number of eligible voters versus registered voters has nothing to do with the question. You were asking how can we make sure that the election of our leaders by the people who do vote isn't stolen. I would say - don't trust Diebold or any other electronic voting machine. I would also hope the media is on their toes and questions any odd result.

It is in fact obvious that it was not; were you living in a cave at the time? The best bet would be for electronic voting machines to print a ballot with the selections marked; these ballots would be kept and counted if there were any question about the results. Being prepared by machine from the voter's selection, there would be no possible ambiguity in reading them.

You are right to complain. The voters that were erroneously scrubbed from the Florida voter rolls for having names similar to convicted felons have not all been corrected - even at this date.
I suspect more chicanery in the new ID requirements. Who's to say how strictly they will be enforced in some places and not in others.
And the honor and objectivity of the people in whose hands our vote is placed have proven to be false - see the attempt by the Republican Blackwell to abuse his position to remove his oponent Strickland from the ballot.

I can't believe you are still whining! Oh get over it already, President Bush broke records with his 2004 election unlike any demo has! A good look at election fraud is the demos in Milwaukee WI when they found enough fraudlant votes that the results could have almost been overturned. When they wanted to make over the election system there were several demos against it.

I don't know that 2004 was stolen.
But in terms of what happened in 2000?
Nothing can be done. The Supreme Dictators are just that -- supreme. They can do anything they want and there is NOTHING that we can do to stop them or make them pay for what they did. And thus, they can easily do it again.
Don't bother to vote. The Supreme Dictators are in charge.

What a ******* idiot, the 2000 election is controversial, the supreme court decision in 2000 wasn't morally or politically right but it was constitutionally right, do some research and you will know that you ******* idiot, 2004 was completly fair, Kerry lost just get over it! And this country would not be better with Al Gore in office. 39%???? THE TURNOUT IN THE LAST ELECTION WAS 60% YOU MORON.

It's "obvious" ? Um, no, it's not "obvious" because nothing was stolen. What *IS* obvious is that (1) you have not read or researched either of those elections and that (2) liberals are whiny cry babies who cannot lose an election graciously and with some class.
Grow up and open a book.
