It's got to be the dumbest thing ever.

I understand that a "bit" is a foreign coin and will eventually make up a dollar, but what does it have to do with football and basketball?

stuuuuuuupid.

Two bits -- a slang for a quarter. It comes from the peso, which had a value of eight to a dollar back in the 1700's.

As far as cheerleading goes, I would assume it's merely a nice rhyme to go with holler. Yeah, it's silly, but a tradition.
