They think that they are the only Americans. They call themselves the United States of America, of meaning from. They are a part of North America. So technically, wouldn't that make Canadians and Mexicans Americans too?

Well technically no, because our nationality isn't defined by the continent we live on, it is defined by the country we live in. If it were the other way around then North America and South America would all be full of Americans, that would be pretty cool.

Well I do have to admit that We from the United States say Americans and think of only ourselves, even in the National Anthem, America the Beautiful.
As though the Lower 48 was exclusive to the North American Continent.
I know that North America has Canadian and Mexican Neighbors, then there is Central America, and Of Course South America! We all live in America, or , The Americas, yet most every one else gets left out!
I guess The United States is as Egotistical as it is represented to be EY????????????

The Americas are the lands of the Western hemisphere or New World consisting of the continents of North America and South America with their associated islands and regions.
The designation is a relatively recent and less ambiguous alternative to America, which may refer to either the entire landmass or the United States of America. The original usage to describe what is sometimes considered a single continent or supercontinent is deprecated for clarity, for which the Americas is used to collectively refer to the landmass and various regions of it.

The earliest known use of the name America for this particular landmass dates from 1507. An accompanying book, Cosmographiae Introductio, explains that the name was derived from the Latinized version of the explorer Americus Vespucius, in its feminine form, America, as the other continents all have Latin feminine names.

-In Portuguese the adjective americano refers commonly to the whole of the Americas.

-In Spanish, americano or americana is used to refer to people from the American continent, much like europeo or europea is used for those living in Europe. The term norteamericano or norteamericana technically refers to any person living in North America but is also commonly used to describe U.S. citizens (even by people in Mexico and Central America)

-In French, as in English, the word Américain can be confusing as it can be both used to refer to the United States, and to the American continents

The reason why people from the United States say they're American and don't think about the other countries is because of The united States being a Super Power full of Ego not only in
government but also Hollywood, culturally we rule the world
through movies and TV as well.
Most United States citizens say we are American becuase the people here look at the other countries like they don't matter.
Thats the way kids are taught in school in the U.S.
But no, piple of all countries in the Americas are all Americans.

This saying Americans only looking at the Unites States is complete utter Bullshit and pompus also misleading and confuses many.

You're right.... but then might is right, too. Technically US, Canada, Mexico are all North America - their citizens North American, just as those from Venzuela, Peru, Chile etc. are the South Americans.

Because when you say you are American, they automatically assume that you are from the USA..... That's how that is.... even tought North, Central and South America have the "America" in it

The actual name of Mexico is "The United States of Mexico" I though this was interesting when I read it somewhere once.
Also, in response to your questions, Americans live in the AMERICAN continent. Great question, I agree.

Well i dont think they want to be called that. See they are called Canada and Mexico.... Not Canado of America or Mexico of America. (Although some places in the USA can be called that.) So.... NO!

individually, I stay in the U. S., yet I evaluate anybody residing on North or South u . s . of america to be American. Ask a Canadian in the event that they're American - they are going to say no. Ask a Mexican - they are going to say no, maximum in all risk. i've got self belief maximum individuals affiliate themselves with the rustic they're from, as antagonistic to the continent. we are the only u . s . with the be conscious u . s . of america in it, and for brevity's sake, we are saying American, as antagonistic to u . s . American. in simple terms my opinion.

The US and Canada are North Americans. There are Central Americans who include Mexicans, Guatemalans, Costa Ricans, Panamanians, etc.
There are South Americans.

Together we are Americans.
