Walk-ons are players who weren't recruited to play on a collegiate team and didn't receive an athletic scholarship, who go to a tryout trying to earn a place on the team.

I am going to assume that you have heard that term maybe with a football tryout or something. The best example I can give you on that is football. With NFL teams most people are drafted from high school to go to college and play ball then the NFL drafts them to play pro ball, but alot of teams when they don't see anyone promissing will hold open tryouts for kickers and other players. In turn you show shup at tryouts sign a release form for injury and such. Give your name and simple information and then you wait to be called and you tryout doing whatever they as. If they see something in you they will call you back.

In college basketball, it means a player "walked on" to the team, as in, tryed out and was good enough to stick, i.e. was not recruited ahead of time.
