The answer to your question can be found in Halloween part 2.
Dr. lomis is told, towards the end of the film, by his assistant that there was a sealed document regarding Michael Myers that was ordered by the courts to be opened. In it it states that Laurie Strode (jamie lee curtis) is the sister of michael myers. She was born after michael was institutionalized and was later adopted by the Strodes. We also find out that the Strodes requested this information sealed to protect Laurie (jamie lee curtis).
If you rent part 2 it is all explained to you. Look out for this part at the end when Dr. loomis is being escorted out of town by a federal marshal and his assisitant about 15 minutes to 20 minutes left in the film

To answer Cookie Cutter question..watch Halloween 6...it explains part of it,Jamie is older and is killed by Michael.Laurie faked her death in between 2 and 4,part 3 has nothing to do with Michael Myers.Laurie changed her name...got married again and had her son.

To add to ErnieS's response: According to the book of 'Halloween II' (yes I read them all...lol) Jamie Lee's character Laurie was in fact the baby that her older sister was babysitting when their brother killed the older one and her boyfriend. So, though as a baby, the 'character' Laurie Strode was also in the begining of the first movie! :-)

I have no idea but it's always bothered me to. I thought he killed his sister when he was like ten years old. Was jamie his half sister? And what about in like the 3rd movie, wasn't he after his 12 year old neice in that movie? What the heck is going on!?

Uh, I've seen the first one, just a couple of years ago as a matter of fact, and she was always portrayed as his younger sister. He had been locked in the mental institution for years and it was one of those "secrets" everybody knew but no one talked about. The way I remember it, she was very young when he went bonkers and she was given up for adoption.

She supposedly died in a car crash before the events of the fourth movie, but was later revealed to have set up an elaborate way to go into hiding.
Jamie was his younger sister. He kills his older sister.
