avg is a good virus checker, but if you get a pirate copy then they keep catching the pirate keys and stopping you from updating the files. Get a copy of a corporate version of symantec.
As long as you are not silly though (prone to opening unknown attachments in unknown emails) and you have a firewall in place, virus scanners are not that essential. a good spyware scanner is more needed. for good spyware software, get pest patrol.

The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out. Zone Alarm firewall is free for personal use and stops unwanted incoming and outgoing traffic. You choose which programs are allowed to access the internet. It's fairly easy to use and updated regularly.

Instal both these web browsers, turn off javascript on one and use that browser for vising unknown websites. They don't support Active X so thats one less way for problems to get on your pc.

Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.

Either AVG or Avast!. Search the web for either one. Both are free and both are stronger antivirus than Norton/McAfee.

Avast! is the best. It continually updates so you get constant protection, and best of all, it's 100% free!

Get AVG, that's what I got and it's great and free but don't get McAfee or Norton they suck and will slow your computer down quite a bit.
