do you mean reducing?
rations can be displayed as fractions
16:28 = 16/28
can be reduced to 8/14 --> 4/7 = 4:7

The three scenarios are :
16:28 , 2:500, 38: 18
1) 16:28 => 16/28
dividing this by the common factor (4) ..
U get 4/7
2) 2: 500 = 2/500 = 1/250
3) 38: 18 = 38/18 = 19/9

the trick is
first make it into numerator/denominator
then find the common divisor for both the numerator and the denominator:
start with 2
divide both numerator and denominator with 2
again see if 2 can be the common divisor ,
if not try 3 then 5 then 7 (i don't want to complicate it further)
you stop when you can't find a common divisor (1 excluded)
then get back to expressing it using : ( i mean colon)
OK..Let's go
16:28
16/28
divideby2
8/14
divide by 2
4/7
can't find a coomon divisor
so 16:28::4:7
Next
2 to 500
2/500
divide by 2
1/125
no more common divisor
so 2:500::1:125 or 2 to 500 equals 1 to 125
Next
39 over 18
39/18
divide by 2
19/9
no more common divisor
so 38:18::19:9 or 38 over 18 equals 19 over 9

well most of it is done by trial and error by looking at the numbers
You see that 16 and 28 can both be divided by 2 so you can do that and you get 8/14 which can be reduced further by dividing by 2 and getting 4/7 but you could have also divided it by 4
2 to 500 same thing you can only divide it in half because 2/2 is 1
so you have 1/250
38/18
you can reduce it by 2 and get 19/9 and that's the farthest you can simplify ♥

These are not too difficult. You just have to find the largest number that divides evenly into both sides of the ratio.
ie.
16:28 both sides can be divided by 4.
this leaves 16:28 = 4:7
ie.
2 to 500 both sides can be divided by 2.
this leaves 2 to 500 equals 1 to 250
38/18 both sides can be divided by 2
this leaves 38/18 = 19/9
Hope that helps!

Well, what I got out of this is you're asking does it distort the ration when simplified. The answer would be no, as long as you simplify correctly. And when it is simplified to 1:5, it means, about, for every 5 black marbles drawn, you should draw atleast 1 pink one. Hope it helps, and good luck with your math.

I think of it a little like simplifying fractions, where you look for common factors you can cancel out from the top and the bottom.
16/28 = (4x4) / (4x7)
= 4/7 (after canceling)
So 16:28 reduces to 4:7.
