Is there really anything you can say to her but "I'm sorry and thank you". Its horrible that these men and women have to go off and die and it seems like most of the country (or the people around me) don't really pay attention to what is going on or even care. I would mainly want any mother to know how proud I am of their son or daughter and how thankful I am for their sacrifice. They are a lot braver and stronger than I will ever be.

I would tell her how wonderful her son/daughter was to give her life for our country, even for the ones who never supported what they were doing in Iraq and for the media that would never shed any good light on the good work being done for the people there. I would tell her that her child died to give all the antiwar, antigoverment, anti everything the freedom to say whatever the media wanted to use for their agenda. I would tell her that her child who went there willingly and maybe even reenlisted that I think he/she was the most wonderful thing there was for keeping me, my family and grandchildren safe!

Sorry for you lose and I understand what you are going through and some day it will get easier to live your life.
We buried our oldest son five years ago. His brother went to Iraq soon after to fight for the ideals of this country.

I would say, "I'm so sorry for your loss. There aren't too many things worse than losing a child."

"I'm so sorry, is there anything I can do to help you?"
Doing anything other than comforting her would be uncalled for. Trying to score political points off of her son's death would be despicable.
