An Emachine is most likely going to have a proprietary mother board. So you can't just buy any mother board and install it. Your best bet would be to buy a bare bones computer. That is just the case, motherboard, processor, fan, and power supply normally. That way it will be a standard ATX case and motherboard which will be extremely more upgradeable.

After that you can swap out the other internals, i.e. modem, video cards, sound cards, ram, and drives. If you search eBay or your local computer store you can pick up a decent bare bones computer for around $100 - 200 depending on what bells and whistles you want. As far as desktops go, I always put my own together this way.

well thats not so easy.
1 You can lok on Ebay for a used MB or a cheap working Machine.
2 You can see if one is available from E machines support
3. Look at the MB then look for a MB of the same configuration ie 1,2,3,4 PCI slots, AGP etc. But there is no gurentee that it will fit.
4 Buy a case with a MB in it that you can swat all your parts into.
Or go to Tigerdirect.com they have som great deals on referbs. The E machines that I have was loaded and under 400.00

Windows XP activation is tied to the original motherboard. I would contact emachine support to see if replacing motherboard would cause the XP activation to fail.

Its easiest if you can get an exact replacement. Then just pop in the processor and ram and hookup all the wires and the drives.Plug in all the cards and reload the OS. That ALL : )
