Guessing you would like to have history of all online communication form and to PC. To have it done really well best way to do would be install packet sniffer and configure it to log traffic to files. You could even do it from 2nd PC connected to same LAN or via WiFi sniffer in totally invisible passive manner.

This goes back to the invention of the modem by companies that are no longer around Paradyne (AT&T), Codex (Motorola), Racal Milgo (defunct). It's all been a progression since then and it all happened long before Cisco and 3com. Search "history of the modem", "statistical multiplexers STDM", and "history of the router" and you may get an idea of how involved it was.
