This is the main reason why I only occasionally watch any Major League Baseball game, and, not even a whole one at that. The innings seem so long & boring! Why is that? Why can't they make them shorter & faster? Also, why are they called " innings" when its an outdoor sport?Shouldn't they be called "outtings?"One more thing:Why are the words "top" & "bottom" used to describe the time left in an inning? After all, when they play, they're standing on top of the baseball field, not under it,which is the bottom! Also,do any of them get bored sitting in the dugout,as a game drags on?

The games could be shorter, but then the networks wouldn't get as many commercials aired.
It's called the "top" of an inning because the Visitor team is at bat. The visiting team always bats first, so that they always appear first, or on top, on the scoreboard.
And yes, the players do get bored in the dugout and in the bull pen. They keep themselves amused by telling jokes and stories, pulling practical jokes, and occasionally watching the game.

You probably think its boring because the pitchers take too long to focus. The reason is, it is pretty hard to throw over 90 miles an hour and come within a square foot of where you are aiming for. If they made innings shorter by an out or two, there would be almost no chance to get runs except by a home run. Inning has nothing to do with whether it is outdoor or not. The innings are named with top and bottom because if it is top, the visiting team is batting, and if it is bottom, the home team is batting. They need something to name it with. What do you think it should be, left and right? Lastly, I think they wouldn't get bored if they have a love for the game.

Probably because your not a baseball fan if they made innings shorter there would be less scoring. I don't know why they are called innings probably because of cricket but they call it top and bottom because probably of cricket. Also would you get bored if you were getting paid to sit in a dugout watching a game from the best seat in the house.

the answer to your question is what happens between pitches and plays. catchers/pitchers have to agree on a pitch, batters get impatient and step out of the box, coaches give signs to the defense, catcher goes out to mound, manager goes out to mound, pitching coach goes out to mound, relief pitcher needs to warm up, umpires discussing a play, managers arguing with umpires, managers getting ejected, and the list goes on.
obviously these things are important to the game and what makes the game unique.
top and bottom i suppose represent time left but it really just tells whether the visitor (top) or home (bottom) team is batting.
as for sitting in the dugout, someone's gotta do it, and you're getting a helluva lotta money sitting on that bench, and it's plenty of fun when you get to pinch hit (in the NL, at least).
hope this helped

Because they are long and boring. It is baseball. It has a series of short spirts of action, but overall, there is a lot of standing around and waiting. But that is the game, and those that love it enjoy it for what could happen with one swing of the bat.

Because the pitcher can throw as many 20 pitches to one batter if the batter keeps hitting it foul;l.
