I use to live in the Los Angeles area.

PROS:
the climate and the weather
the beautiful nature such as the ocean, beach, and mountains
different shopping places
the amount of different tourist activities one can do

CONS:
too crowded
rush hour time out on the roads
parking problems because it's too crowded
amount of time it takes to get somewhere especially depending on traffic
cost of living is higher

That's just a few that comes to my mind, hope that's helpful to you.

Depending on where your going to live in California ....
Big cities have a lot of crime .. but that's everywhere ..
.
Your more apt to experience earthquakes in Cali ...

In some areas you will experience severe fog ( Central Valley ) ( Tule River fog ) boy you ain't been in fog till you been in Tule fog ..lol
You also have something called valley fever to worry about .. but not a lot of people get it ...still something to look into

Your need for Spanish will become apparent as it is almost the first language of California

rents are high ...and buying a home is often out of reach for most people there ...
BUT you can still find reasonable homes in the Central valley ... Outer Fresno to say Bakersfield .....

and of course you will have an actor as your govenator ;)

Hope it helps ....

I had stayed in California x 6 months. I had experienced staying in Northern and Southern California. Different places in California has its own pros and cons too.
San Francisco, California is the best for me since I just came from the Philippines. It is best in the sense that I can move around town with just the map only. There are buses around and you can transfer to other Muni buses as along as it is within the time frame in the bus ticket. You can explore it by yourself. My cousin used to live in San Francisco x 30 years even without a car. Means of transportation is accessible.
The disadvantage of staying in San Francisco is its high cost of living. The tax is 8.5%. It is the highest in all California states that I had been so far. Parking is also expensive. Even California residents dont bring their car downtown because parking is expensive. It is also hard to park. Not everybody has the courage to drive over the up and down areas of San Francisco. Most of the people shop at nearby Daly City since parking there for shopppers is free and theres more space. Room rental is so expensive fro $1,000 above.
I had been in the Contra Costa County also which includes Antioch, Concord, LaFayette, Pittsburgh to name a few. It is 45 minutes drive from San Francisco. It is accessible by BART. The Bay Area Railray Transport! However, since i was just starting, it is hard to stay here since there were few buses unlike in San Francisco in which it is very accessible. Tax here is lower.
I had stayed also in San Diego! The means of transportation is also good but not in all areas. You can ride the trolley to see the whole of San Diego and there are buses in most trolley stations. The weather is good so most of retired couples prepare it here. The tax is a bit lower than in San Francisco.
El Centro, is one of the hottest places I had been to in California like today (58-91 degrees Fahrenheit). The cost of living here is really lower , a studio type room in San Francisco will be 3 bedroom here. There is a 24 hour Walmart here.
Camarillo is in the Ventura County. Lower cost of living here than in San Francisco. It is almost an hours drive from LA. I havent heard how much the rental here is .
LA is accessible to bus also. I have a cousin who stayed here for 5 years without a car and yet survived. However, the worst traffic so far in California is over in this area. It is also one of the hottlest place in California too. In places I had been hottest so far in California is El Centro , probably 2nd is LA (57-82 degress F today).
I dont know the crime rate here in California , probably this is another factor to consider when transferring in a place.

Great variety in topology (mountains, marshes, plains, coastline, deserts, etc.)
Great people (high diversity, laid back)
Great business/job opportunities for skilled work
Great universities
Lots of cultural things (symphony, theater, cinema, museums, etc.)

CONS
Crowds in the desirable parts
Traffic on the freeways and streets
High cost of living (highest in the U.S.)
High state and sales taxes
High violent crime rates in some cities
Poor public schools, perpetuated by a strong teachers' union and low funding
Poor infrastructure (roads, power lines, bridges, ....)

In California, you are surrounded by rich, snobby, hot people, and that is just too competitive. But-you have great weather, and celebrities, and a pretty view depending on where you live. California is a large state. SO you never know who is a KKK member, or a Liberal person.
