it's a sensor on the top of the light. It is photo sensitive. As light hits it it turns off.. Thinking the sun is coming up.

Years ago I used to work for a company that made outdoor lighting. Street lights were not part of thier product line but their lights worked essentially the same. Many if not all street lights are equipped with a heat sensor that shuts them down if they get to hot. Then when the tempurature drops to an acceptable range they come back on. It saves changing bulbs as frequently.
It is rather freaky sometimes because for a while it seems that my dad and I were always "shutting off" street lamps. But it was just coincedence.

Happened to me ONE time during a period of about two months. I actually walked around a K-Mart parking lot and each one would go out within seconds of me passing under it. There's probably a good scientific explaination but it's damn sure weird.

I haven't seen the show but that happens to me. I always thought it was 'normal' until I started mentioning it to people and they thought I was crazy because it never happened to them. I'll be interested to see the rest of the answers...

Hi. Your headlights sometimes shine on the photo-detector which controls the light.

I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THAT, BUT IT HAPPENS TO ME ALSO, IT IS SO WEIRD. YOU MUST ALSO GET SHOCKED WHEN THE WEATHER IS GETTING COOL OUTSIDE, OR WHEN YOU SHUT YOUR CAR DOOR.
