I see several people replied in the same manner that i was told, no available server to cover the empty tables --- My question to this is, why do you build an establishment with more tables than you intend to staff, you would think management would realize this situation would put a bad taste(no pun intended)in the customers mouth

It's because they are don't have enough wait staff to serve that's why they make you wait. Or the kitchen is back up. It's better that you wait around than to seat you at a table where no one will come by to take your order. Or maybe you'll wait for your food for an hour before it gets to you. Every restaurant has it's own system until you work at a restaurant than you won't understand. 15 mins is actually not bad. I've waited 2 hrs for a seat before. In the future if you don't like to wait maybe conisder dinner before 6 P.M.. or after 8. P.M. For sure you won't have to wait.

Because if they keep seating one server over and over you'll get crappy service due to the overwhelming flow of guests.
It's best to give a server at least 3 minutes between tables to make sure everyone is taken care of. And the server can take care of everyone the same. If you complain because you see a table open and no one is seating you there, there's a reason.
Stop being so damn impatient or be a server for a day and take care of 8 tables crying that they don't have mayo or ketchup. It sucks. People that go out to eat and complain about waiting for a table SUCK and they only care about themselves and their crappy burger from Chili's.

Depends on whether or not you wanted smoking or not. Plus it depends on where the server is for that particular section, the server could be on break or lunch. Also I don't know what time of the night you went but that section could have been closed for the evening. As the evening wears down they have less servers so less tables open.

I don't know if Chilli's takes reservations or not but those booths could be reserved. They probably haven't completely cleaned the table off.

It's all in the timing.
If there are X ammt of servers vs. X ammt of tables and X ammt of people waiting to be seated then the establishment will pace out the seating.
Once you are seated you will be expecting to have your order taken within X ammt of minutes.....right?
Timing, pace, expectations......
Do you see how the staff of a restaurant is thinking FOR you?
Just know that there is NO conspiracy against you !!!! It's for the good of all involved.

God I hate people like you!! Okay, say, hmmm...in the section I was in at work today there 12 tables. Say there was only one or two servers on in that section. How do you suggest that we handle you and all other 11 tables and provide the "excellent" service you want? Because I know if the service wasn't perfect, you'd definitely complain and not leave me a tip. Make sense?? Use common sense.

Each table or group of tables, in a restaurant, is assigned to a specific server/waiter. This is called a "station".

If (for whatever reason) there is no one assigned to serve/wait a particular station, then it is closed and no one is seated there.

If someone calls in sick or the restaurant is short staffed... these are a couple of reasons this may occur.

apparently youve never worked in a restaraunt. just because they have open tables doesnt mean they have people to wait on those tables. I'm glad that was one of my first jobs. I learned to be patience while waiting. they are doing there best to take care of you but when you have 1 person trying to wait on 15 tables it can get a bit hectic and frustrating. People yelling at you and cussing and being demanding. Just b/c the waitress is the only one you see doesnt mean that she is to blame for everything. there are many people whos roles are important in food service. But the waitress is the most worked and survives off the peanuts that customers call theirselves leaving for tips. Lay off the servers..... they still only have 2 hands to work with.

In my case, I'd get very irate people at the front of the line waiting to be seated and they saw empty tables. Well that's because I knew I had reservations for those tables and no amount of slipping me money was going to make me drop a reservation.

Then of course, the reservation walks in to the head of the line and says "Smith, party of 5 at 7:00" and I'd grab the menus and show them to their table. Those customers at the front of the line would gripe and get p*ssy. "Why do they get to cut in ahead of us??" I had to explain that they had reservations, and maybe next time call and make one.

People can just be like that. Please don't become one of them. You don't know what's going on behind the scenes.

No. just b/c they have tables empty does not mean they have a waiter on staff to work it. It is shift work so when it slows down and people are sent home then only a couple waiters for the whole restaurant are available to take care of you..
