Just put in a temporary forward from your VA address to CA. You can do it on form 3575 which you can pickup at any post office and send it postage free as long as you mark the zip code on the reverse side of the card.
All of your first class mail will be sent to your temp address free of charge. You won't get your catalog's though. If you don't know how long you will be in CA , leave the end date blank and cancel it if you come back within six months.
You might follow up to make sure all your bills are forwarded by calling 1-800-ASK-USPS and following the prompts to delivery service. That way you can get a live operator to help you if there are any problems.

The mail system in the USA has been around for a long time. Think back to the days where there where no cars, no planes and no computers, and your mail came by horse and buggy. The mail system is complex ed and has developed over the years using computers, automobiles and planes to send mail. Mail is sent to large distribution centers in a general area( CITY) than broken down into smaller hubs CALLED POST OFFICES. Than broken down again and distributed to the people. It's a basic system starting with a large quaint and broken down over and over again! That's why zip codes where developed for towns and cities. Look up the history of the United States Post Office! I copied this from the web sight: The United States Postal Service® is an independent establishment of the Executive Branch of the United States Government. It operates in a businesslike way. In the more than two centuries since USPS® began, it has grown and changed with America. Discovering the history of the Postal Service is a journey into the history of transportation, economics, industrialization, communications, and government. Today, the Postal Service™ delivers hundreds of millions of messages each day to more than 141 million homes and businesses. This is the story of the evolution of the Postal Service and the important role it has played in the development of the United States.

I know that in NJ they do not forward the mail, that's why my neighbor asks me to pick it up for him whenever he is away, so that I could send him all the bills. You should call your post office and see whether they could forward it. Good luck!

You might want to look into Premium Forwarding Service.
i realize that it costs ($10.50 a week) but it is far more reliable than putting you mail on temporary forward (which is the second option open to you.)

nope...you will have to go pick it up. sorry
You might try calling your local post office. (where they are keeping your mail) and ask the post master there if he could do you a favor, and forward the bills to you... I doubt he/she will but it's worth a try. Good luck
