It is an upside-down crescent moon over a dot in the center.... it;s located above a note... please help?

People have answered right, but I thought I'd add some more.

Usually, you hold out a fermata for twice the normal note value, plus however much you feel is appropriate. Unless, of course, you are under a conducter. Then you just cut off when your conducter tells you to.

It's called a Fermata. It's a hold or a pause that indicates the note should be held longer than the note value would indicate.
