For WWI, "All Quiet on The Western Front" was pretty good. There was a kids series printed between the wars called "The Boy Allies." They're alright as far as kids books go. Good luck finding any copies though.
For WWII, try "Run Silent, Run Deep," the sequel to that, "Dust on the Sea," "The Boat," "Return from the Deep" (or something like that), or "With Blood and Iron."

You can download Joseph Altsheler's WWI fiction at http://www.gutenberg.net. Unfortunately, he died before WWII.
He also has excellent fiction on the Civil War, the French & Indian War, and the settling of the Ohio River Valley.

"All Quiet on the Western Front" by Eric Remarque. It is short, easy to read, and a modern literary classic.
The plot: In 1914 a class of high school boys, all 17, drop out of school and go to war at the urging of their teacher.
