Clay is found as a natural soil texture
under natural conditions when a river floods sand deposits out first (heaviest particle) clay last would probably accumulate in areas that remained wet - swamps etc.
in La. is called Black Jack - the soil lacks color and is grayish black when contrasted with soil from other areas
Red Clay is a noted component in Georgia and Mississippi has Yazoo clay ridges that make building a home in certain areas a challenge.

Cuneiform tablets (clay tablets) were used to write on. The Sumerians were the ones who wrote on these clay tablets. After attending school for twelve years, Sumerians became scribes, or writers.

They used cylinder seals that were carved out of stone & rolled wet clay tablet. Once the tablets were imprinted with this seal, they were sun-dried or kiln-fired, making the imprints of the seals permanent. The cylinder seals were used much as our signatures are today.

They had pretty much NO natural resources-no metals, jewels, cloth, food... Mud was pretty much all they had-and so they found a way to use it. If you want the story bluntly-I gotta say that's it.
