You can take one now. Usually on the first day of your missed period you can take one.

I'd go ahead and take it.
The standard time is as early as the first day of your missed period. Lately, the home pregnancy test makers claim to be able to do better, going as early as 5 days before you miss a period, but those results can be unreliable (you can test negative, then three days or five days or seven days later, test again, and the hormones have built up enough to register a positive response).
Eight days late is more than enough time to render a correct reading. Even if your period is somewhat irregular, you should be able to test now and get an actual answer.
If it bothers you that much, get the box that has two tests. Test once now and if you feel like it, test again a week later or something. It's not "too early" though.

Generally 8 days past your expected period is more than long enough to insure an accurate response with a home pregnancy test, but since you have irregular periods it's hard to say.
Do you have any idea when you ovulated? If you do, using a test two weeks after ovulation will give you an accurate response. If you don't know you should probably test now. If the test is negative wait and you don't start your period for another week, test again.

Since your period is irregular, I'd wait another week. If you don't want to waste money on over the counter preg tests, call your doctor and have them order a blood test...no mistakes with that.

I would say take one anyway. Better to just get your mind off of it. If it says no and you still don't start then go to the Doc and have a blood test done. That will tell you for sure! Try not to stress too much that can make your period late!

You can take one as soon as 5 days before your missed period depending on what test you buy. In my very personal experience I have found that the best time for me is two weeks after my missed period. I recommend calling your dr and doing it the right way.

If it is not normal for you to be 8 days late, then go ahead and take a pregnancy test. It's not too soon to do it, and if you are pregnant it's best to know sooner than later.
