Stay and go to only the safe beaches and neighborhoods. Keep to the south part of Rio.and stick to the Ipanema/Leblon beaches. If you go for a week, that's all you need ,plus supervised sightseeing trips to the major attractions, Don't go anywhere alone and be extra careful at night. Wear little or no jewelry and dress like the natives.Rio is a wonderful and beautiful city and their should be very little reason to fear for your safety if you blend in.

I am from Rio, but live in NY now, and can say that Rio is a safe place..I feel danger everywhere i go in the world..but that shoundnt spoinl your trip...I would be great, if you could meet some Brazilian friends to move around with so you dont feel so out of place.. Try to get listings for restaurants and hangout places to find where you can be around Brazilians enjoying Rio the same way you want to enjoy it..Much luck and enjoy...

Rio is actually really safe. I lived in Sao Paulo for 5 years and made it to Rio many, many times! I LOVE IT there! If you are smart about your activities and the amount of attention you do or do not draw to yourself, you will be safe. If you speak Portuguese you will be in even better shape. Brazil is actually a very safe country, Rio included.

Muitos Saudades!

Lived in Rio for 2 years and never had a problem. Always be aware of what is going on around you. If there are "suspicious" characters around, just move on to another spot/store/more populated street, etc. Important thing for visitors--don't get distracted by chatting with your friends while walking. Of course you don't walk in silence, but don't get wrapped up in your conversation and forget to be aware of your surroundings. Don't go to ATMs at night. After withdrawing money during the day, don't go for a long walk on the beach. Don't fall asleep on the bus and pay attention to who is getting on/off. Good luck.
