As far as I know, there are only 2 ways to keep a Tivo current: Connecting through a phone line, or connecting through a wireless network on the computer.

I cancelled my phone service and now only use a cell phone, and I really don't want to set-up a wireless network just for Tivo.

As an alternative, is there any kind of adapter I can use to connect to Tivo through my cell phone? I have a vague recollection of hearing this option somewhere.

Series 2 TiVo (Cable) or DirecTiVo (DirecTV)?

DirecTiVo gets the guide data through the satellite feed itself and does not "use" the phone connections once it is initially set up.

I believe, but am not 100% sure, that if you use HMO (Home Media Option) with a regular Series 2 TiVo, and connect it to the Internet, it can download guide data and you can set programming choices on-line rather than via the phone line.

If this is not the case, there are hacks to enable this as I know people do it. Check out tivocommunity.com for more details

If you do not have a land line, and you can't connect it to the Internet, you will still be abel to use it, but you will not get any information on the program guide. The only thing you will be able to do is record shows. In that case, you are better off renting a DVR from your cable or satellite provider. In addition, TiVos connect to the Internet providing video on demand services. If all you want to do is record, invest in a DVD recorder or get a DVR from your cable or satellite provider.
