Pulitzer produced his periods equivalent of tabloid newspapers. He was a self-serving charlatan, a hoaxer and dishonest as all get out. I've always wondered why a prize named after him would be considered a good thing.

Imperialism... and its cousin, racism.... were not discredited among educated people until WW2.

Pulitzer like a great story that sold newspaper. He's the one that published stories that are "credited" with starting the Spanish-American war. IN that sense, he was an imperialist, but more likely he was just a shrewd businessman.
