Don't give this person more energy then they deserve.
Distraction is key. Think of something or someone else if the person is driving you nuts. Just be sure to pay attention if what the person says is important.
Place some distance or limit contact with the co-worker, if possible.
Be cordial, but keep your distance.
Remember, kill em with kindness. And silence is golden.

So you got one of those to, huh? Seems like every workplace has one of those types.
Does their behavior actually affect your work? Do they keep you from completing your tasks, reaching your deadlines, or finishing your deliverables? If they are not doing their job, and it carries over to you, then you need to DOCUMENT their actions. Present them to your supervisor, or even your Human Resources department if necessary.
In the meantime, you keep your head down and work hard. It can be very frustrating when you feel like your efforts are being ignored, while a jerk gets away with their behavior. However, what you may not know is that this person's days are numbered, and there may be others who are equally fed up with their behavior. Unless your work is directly affected, then let your co-worker keep on messing up until they go overboard and get fired or demoted.
Patience is the key. They'll get theirs . . . you just keep on being the good person. Easier said than done sometimes, but keep on believing that.

I know how irritating it can be to work with someone you hate. One thing that helps is to completely feel sorry for him. If you were ever to get to the point where you were that disgusting (not possible) you would have to be at the bottom of the pit. Maybe that's where he is and he deserves your pity. Then put a pink bubble around yourself and call it your psychic protection. This might help you get through the day without him sucking your energy.

Are you sure he's the most irritating, disgusting and obnoxious person you have ever met? Because I think my mother-in-law tops him.

You are really hurting yourself more than anybody. and whats worse? your coworker probably dosen't know how you feel and dosen't give a ratz azz. forget the stupid co-worker. be true to yourself enjoy your life. if he is going over board report him. If you can take breaks/lunch away from where he is. If its possible try to get transferred to another dept. Your very health depends on it.

Number 1 would be to minimize contact .. if that is possible. If you can't not speak with him, then deliver your message/question in few words & if he wastes your time say something like "man, I'm sorry, I am really in a rush today."
Other than that, I read a book that said to imagine the noxious in fields of flowers & only comment "That's nice." to anything they say.
I have my best success (not perfect in ANY way) with remembering Shakespear's line, "He is to be pittied and not despised." Think of how rotten it is for that poor jerk going through his life as if he were raised by wolves...
Good luck. If it helps any, I got one too.

If he gets too irritating just tell him you wouldn't piss on him if he were on fire. You are spending way too much time on this guy. Don't let this freak ruin your happiness.

Don't let this person rent space in your head. You can't change him but you can change your response to him. Maybe it's time to move on to another job...
