I just had a spa installed and they said if the breaker box is not within clear line of sight from the spa, the codes say you have to have one.

Most definitely! The switch should be a fused disconnect sized for the hot tub. Since it should be located outside it should be rated NEMA 3R (Rain tight or rain resistant). The breaker in your breaker panel serving this circuit should be the a ground-fault interrupter type.

I believe most building codes would have you place a disconnect with ground fault protection in sight and within 5 feet of the tub... I just saw that somewhere on TV.
