The answer to that is simple. People in the United States, no matter whether they are in government or not, do not like sharing power. In reality this 'government' is old and tired anyway. They sit around the House and Senate, patting each other on the back and beginning each 'position' with the proverbial -- "I thank my good friend from Virginia" (or Maine or New York) and then they argue a point or two or ten, getting no where by the way, and they talk and talk and talk and get nothing done. It's that way from the bottom of government to the top. They're all full of it. They have all of these bills to read and decipher and they either fall asleep reading them or they don't read them at all! They just sit on them and hold papers and files in their hands or under their arms so they look "busy". Then they complain when something slips through that is not to their liking!. They don't SOLVE anything because they want to appear important. Something they could SOLVE in a day, they take two months They do this because they want to appear powerful. They like to drag things out because it makes them APPEAR [powerful But to no avail, Because they are all useless.
And most are too old to do the job anyway. We need all new senators and representatives. And all of them should be no older than 43!

(A friend's mother worked for the federal govenrment for twenty years. She says that if she didn't want to do any work on any particular day, she came to work, grabbed two or three folders, put them on her desk, took out some papers, put them back in the folders and then traipsed down the hall to visit a friend, folders in tow, and did this sh ** all day long! She says she did it for years at least four times a month )

The American people figure out what is best for the American people. Then the American people vote.

It's called a Democratic-Republic.

I don't recall that the US has ever had fewer than 2 parties...

What's the best thing about the U.S.? We have different political parties to represent the people. What's the worst thing about the U.S.? We have different political parties that bicker and blame each other for everything instead of working together to protect the people.

In an ideal world this would happen. Even in the non ideal world I grew up in, it happened. Back in the 50's, House Speaker Sam Rayburn & Sen Majority Lyndon Johnson worked With Pres Eisenhour.

Exactly!
I believe firmly that both Democrats and Republicans have good ideas to bring to the table. Only problem is, Republicans won't vote for a good Democratic idea, because it's Democratic, and Democrats won't vote for a good Republican idea, because it's Republican.

230 years of history - it has proved that 2 parties can not sit down & play nice except during wartime. This is the 1st wartime that they have not come together to defend country. Proof that selfishness abounds in most of us - we want it our way.

Simple, Republicans have it in their minds that Democrats do nothing but Lie, and Democrats have it in their minds that Republicans do nothing but Slande/Insult. If these two groups would meet, they would bring this mindset to the meeting, and nothing productive would insue.
