I was layed off from work 3 weeks ago. Since that day I have put my resume in everywhere in this city. I have faxed at least 40 resumes out to people, not to mention the numerous ones I have submitted by email. I am also with temp agencies. I am skilled as a receptionist & am willing to do anything clerical. There doesn't seem to be any jobs in this area altho in the paper there seem to be plenty. I have applied to them all, even some that I know I wasn't qualified for. Am I doing something wrong ? My resume is clear & concise. I need to pay bills & it is affecting my marriage now because my husband has also been out of work the last 3 weeks. He can't find a job either. What in the world do I do about paying rent, electric, phone, & all the things you would need to survive ? I'm in the Lancaster, Pa. area. I am open to any suggestions. I don't know how else to go about getting a job with my skills other than what I have already done.

Are you using one resume for every job you are interested in? If you have sent out 40 resume's in three weeks, that tells me you haven't put much effort into researching the jobs that are open.

Chances are your resume is too general. Pick out a job you are very qualified for, and spend time tailoring your resume to each job aplication submitted. You have to sell yourself! Look at the job description and bring out every bit of education and experience that proves you are qualified on every point addressed in the job description. If they require two years of experience make sure your resume points out at least two full years of experience dates. Concentrate on Using EVERY buzzword in the job description in your work experience or you will be screened out very early on.

My employer will send your resume immediatly to the "dead letter" pile if you don't apply for a current, open position. Blanket resume's are not accepted, so make sure you attach a cover letter pinpointing the position you are applying for.

Patience is a virtue. I spent countless hours online and doing applications sometimes without even a response. Stick to it though and the right job will undoubtedly come along. I have my dream job now, and love it - it took awhile, but the other jobs would not have been worth it. Don't give up!

For now why not put up an ad for before adn after school child care to help out with the bills. Continue doing what you are doing with putting out reseme's you will eventually get a new job.

That happened to me last fall. I put out soooo many applications, and was accepted by some, but only the farthest from home. I finally stumbled on my job by accident. It took about 2-3 months.
