I got a acer ferrari laptop and it has two ports for ram. one is in the system which came with 256 mb ram.I want to add 1 gig ram to the other port to improve the performance .is it ok to do it? some where I read that having differnt ram strenghs on two differrent ports will lead to mother board getting burnt or some things like that.any help will be appreciated

You would want to get RAM that matches your system. it would be better to buy a whole new computer then try to upgrade beyond getting RAM.

Look up your system at http://www.coastmemory.com By looking up the model, you can see what came with it, and how much more RAM will fit. At this point, I would consider buying THE MAXIMUM. That is, two RAM modules to MAX OUT your system. Simple discard or SELL your old RAM. (this website also buys used RAM). They guarantee that the RAM that they send you WORKS!

It is not a problem to have different size sticks in each slot, but there is a maximum amount of RAM you can have, so you need to make sure your maximum is not 1GB, else you will not be able to add the 1GB to the 256 already in there.

Use the Crucial website, hit Scan My System and it'll tell you pretty much everything you need to know. No, you don't need to have sticks of the same capacity, just of the same speed.
