As I remember, the Hellfire Club as they were called, was an England based cult. They were know to hold Satanic Rituals and Orgies. One of the 12 persons who attended the first meeting of this group was Benjamin Franklin, he kept attending the meetings yet never became a member.

The "Hellfire Club", though it never called itself that, goes back to a group founded n 1720 by Charles Edward. The name was later used, popularly, for a number of groups, calling themselves, variously, the "Brotherhood of St. Francis of Wycombe", the "Order of the Knights of St. Wycombe", and the "Monks of Medmenham". Franklin was part of the St. Francis group, founded around 1746 by Sir Francis Dashwood. That they were Satanic is Christian propaganda, on the same basis that the Christians claimed Judaism and Wicca are Satanic. What the Hellfire Club were was a bunch of Dirty Old Men with the money to bring in lots of whores with whom to play. The idea is nothing new, there are actually two clubs in the U.S., one in New York and one in Chicago, called the Hellfire Club, both S/M based.

Benjamin Franklin was involved in several fraternal organizations. He was a Freemason and started a group called the Junta, which was a men's club where each member gave a speech on a specific topic at each meeting. I believe that to join the Junta, you had to join one of its many affiliate organizations first and then work your way up into acceptance by the Junta.

I read his autobiography and no mention was made of the Hellfire Club. There is no denying he was an odd bird; he worked his butt off as a printer and retired at a young age. Then, he helped found America and went to France to bang female French courtiers and booze it up in Paris.

He's my hero.
