What a confusing three letter word.
(1) A ton or LONG TON is a British unit of weight equal to 2240 lbs or 1016 .046 909 kg.
(2) In the US a ton or SHORT TON or a NET TON is also a unit of weight equal to 2000 lbs.
(3) Elsewhere, a ton or METRIC TON is a unit of weight equal to 1000 lbs.
(4) In shipping, a ton or FREIGHT TON is a unit of volume or weight used for charging or measuring shipping . It depends on the type of material being shipped but generally taken as 40 cubic feet, 1 cubic metre or 1000 kg. This comes out to 2204.620 lbs.
(5) The ton can also be a DISPLACEMENT TON which is used for measuring the displacement of a ship b ut that comes out nicely at 2240 lbs the same as the LONG TON.
Some extra poin ts to note;
(a) Physycists would want to point out that weight in all of the above definitions is wrong and we really mean MASS.
(b) Thank our lucky stars that a LONG POUND, a SHORT POUND, a METRIC POUND and a FREIGHT POUND don't exist!
(c) Doing a ton is a unit of speed, costing a ton is a unit of money, both have nothing to do with pounds weight/mass.
